Description
A delightful and soft French bread perfect for any meal or simply enjoyed with butter.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
- 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, add the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.
- Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide it into the desired shape, whether a loaf or rolls.
- Place the shaped dough onto a baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the top with egg wash if desired. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Notes
If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour while kneading. Feel free to add herbs or cheese for extra flavor.
