Description

A simple and rewarding recipe for fresh, homemade French bread that’s perfect for sandwiches or enjoying warm with butter.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and instant yeast.
  2. Gradually add the warm water and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for about 60 minutes or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
  6. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it on a baking sheet.
  7. Let it rise again for 30 minutes.
  8. Score the top with a knife and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Let cool before slicing.

Notes

For a crustier bread, place a pan of water in the oven while it bakes. You can also add herbs like rosemary or thyme for extra flavor.
