Description

A satisfying and healthier alternative to store-bought bread, this easy homemade whole wheat bread recipe is perfect for bakers of all levels.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 cups 100% whole wheat flour

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm water, honey, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Stir in olive oil and salt into the yeast mixture.
  3. Gradually add whole wheat flour, stirring until you get a soft dough.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  6. After rising, punch down the dough gently to release air.
  7. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  8. Cover the pan and let the dough rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Let cool before slicing.

Notes

For best results, ensure the water temperature is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast. Add seeds or nuts for extra flavor and nutrition.
