Description

A simple and rewarding recipe for homemade white bread dough, perfect for sandwiches and toast.


Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or vegetable oil)


Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough begins to come together. Once it forms a dough, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
  5. After the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Turn it out onto a floured surface and shape it into a loaf.
  6. Grease a loaf pan and place the shaped dough inside. Cover and let it rise again for about 30 minutes, or until it has risen slightly above the top of the pan.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Once the dough has risen, place the loaf in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Notes

Ensure the water is warm, not hot, to keep the yeast active. Knead well for structure.
